Our success relies on having the right people in the right roles with the training, support and development they need. Investing in the development of our colleagues demonstrates how we are living up to our vision and our values.

Investors in People

We are fully accredited by Investors in People, demonstrating our commitment to providing an environment where we actively attract, retain, and promote the best people. We were assessed in accordance with nine categories within the framework of “Leading”, “Supporting” and “Improving” our people, based on research into what makes a company succeed in the long term, and trends in how successful companies lead and support their people.

Apprentices

Investing in our people from the start of their career is important to us, which is why we have an active apprenticeship programme across the business; we currently have 80 apprentices – approximately 10% of our total workforce – training in a variety of office and site-based roles. Our apprentices get an average of two years on-the-job training and an NVQ (or equivalent). In many cases, they stay on with us for further training or move into permanent roles.

Real Living Wage

We were the first listed housebuilder to be accredited by the Living Wage Foundation for paying our employees a “real” living wage. We require all of our subcontractors to pay their operatives in accordance with the real Living Wage, when working on Gleeson sites.

Mental Health First Aiders

Looking after our people is key to us as a business and that includes both physical and mental wellbeing and health. We recognise that the construction industry has high levels of poor mental health and that’s why we promote a culture where ‘it’s ok to talk’. The business has around 10% of its workforce trained as mental health first aiders across all disciplines.

Paula Clark Case Study

Health and Safety Manager nominated for 100 Most Influential Women in Construction

Paula Clark, Health and Safety Manager for the North East division, has been nominated in the National Builder Federation Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Awards. These awards are aimed at showcasing women in the sector in order to make female and non-binary role models more visible and accessible, and help to shine a light on those that are working to support equality, diversity, inclusion and equity across the industry through their actions and support of others. Paula has been at Gleeson for two years and has been influential in improving awareness and reducing the risk of accidents and near misses across her region. We wish her the best of luck in the awards.

Gender Pay and Diversity

Gleeson is an equal opportunities employer and will never discriminate on the grounds of sex, race, religion or belief, age, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or disability. We believe that everyone should be paid fairly, regardless of their gender and we pay equally for doing the same job and encourage women to apply for roles at all levels.

We continue to seek ways of recruiting more females into the construction industry by working in partnership with Women into Construction and Women in Property. Over the past 12 months we have recruited more apprentices and graduates that are female, promoting and investing in women in construction.

We have improved the gender diversity of our Board, with two female Non-Executive Directors along with a female Company Secretary. Over the past 12 months many of our internal promotions have seen females taking more senior roles and we continue to look at roles that females occupy and review how our succession planning programme fits in with these roles including commencement of talent mapping.
